Over 65 Years of Service

The Lions Club of
Weston was chartered in the Town of Weston, Ontario, Canada in 1941.
In 1967, the Town was amalgamated with the City of York in the
Municipality of Toronto and in 1998 the City of York was amalgamated
into the City of Toronto. Weston maintains its unique town flavour
within the larger City of Toronto. It has its own Farmers Market in the summer, a
Santa Claus parade in the winter and a number of local organizations
such as the Weston Lions and Weston Historical Society which work to retain some
of the small town community feeling within the larger city.
The Weston Lions built the local
recreation arena and swimming pool which are all part of Lions Park.
Although both have been turned over to the City of Toronto, the Lions
still operate the arena, man the snack bar within the arena and manage the
recreation hall facilities. The arena is run as a non-profit
operation to serve the community. The Snack bar is used as one of
the two main funding raising projects for the Club. The other is
an arrangement with the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club where the Lions
supply the staffing, both Lions and friends of Lions, for give-aways at
the gates of the Sky Dome, where the Blue Jays play, and in return the
Weston Lions receive money for their charitable works.
The Weston Lions Club also runs a Pancake Breakfast at the annual
opening of the Farmers Market as both a Community event and as a
fund raiser as well.
The Club currently has more than 30
members who are very active throughout the year as a result of
the ongoing fund raising activities. Charitable works include
local concerns such as donations to many of the local
charities, support of local hospitals, school awards and seniors activities.
There has also been a focus on the blind through donations to the
Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Lions Foundation of
Canada (training guide dogs for the blind). International donations have been made to support
medical and sight related activities in other countries.
Weston Lions have
contributed their time and effort at the district level with many
District and Zone officers over the years.
Four members of the
Weston Lions have been District Governor; Carl Caskey, Jack Watt, and Harvey Higgins
now deceased and current member
Wayne Hoey.
